In 2021, prolonged grief disorder was added to volume 5 of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). This interview explores how prolonged grief disorder is distinguished and described in the DSM, as well as why it was added. Mental health expert and naturopathic physician Peter Bongiorno, ND, LAc, will also describe some strategies on how to work with this patient population from an integrative medical standpoint in clinical practice.

Peter Bongiorno, ND, LAc, is codirector of InnerSource Natural Health and Acupuncture. Specializing in emotional and mental health, Bongiorno researched at the National Institute of Mental Health and Yale’s Department of Pharmacology before studying at Bastyr University. He is a past-president of the NY Association of Naturopathic Physicians. He was a major contributor to the Textbook of Natural Medicine (Elsevier), and has authored several books.
